Paul Daniels

Most Important Question Ever

Alan Rorrison: Any one who knows me will expect this. But what colour of socks do you like to wear!

Paul Daniels: Who cares? Oh yes, Debbie does... she always lays out the socks to fit the outfit. For a very long time, when I was single, everything I owned was black or blue, with white shirts so that I never had to worry about what I had on... it would match!

How did you catch your big break?

Rvoice100: Hi Paul, thanks for giving me the opportunity to ask a few questions.

How did you first get to do a TV show? There are a lot of talented magicians out there that will never get that kind of chance how does it come around? And finally what do you count as your strongest and weakest illusions?

I hope you can take the time to answer, many thanks - you’re a real inspiration.

Paul Daniels: My first TV shows came about because I won a few competitions at conventions and told the local TV stations. TV, like all the media, is hungry for space filling items. If you don't tell 'em you exist, how are they supposed to know?

Also it all depends on what you call talented magicians - there are some great magicians who we all admire at conventions but would bore the pants off normal people. Then again, to become famous you have to be able to do MORE than your act. Some people can only do one kind of magic and that's it!

I am the last person to ask what was the strongest or the weakest ... it all depends on the moment, the emotion, the happiness or the built in likes or dislikes of the viewer/audience. You can never tell for sure.

How did you start out in magic?

Babychamdream: Hi Paul, my question is what may you decide you wanted to do magic.

Also was it seeing some one performing it? Who was it?

Paul Daniels: I read a book with The Age Cards trick in it and did it on myself. I thought it was wonderful and still use it from time to time. Who knows why anyone wants to be anything. Your life happens.

Experience

McDermott: Hi there Paul, first of all, thanks for taking your time to answer these questions…blah, blah, blah. My problem is this: I'm 13 years old and I want a bit of experience. I've already done a 15 minute spot at Leeds city varieties, a couple of kids shows, some stuff for school and other things.

However I'm greedy. I want more! I want somewhere were I can work say, every other Saturday or something I can do regularly. I think I have the skill and confidence to do things like this but where do I get a ''gig?” I would love to do children’s often but how do I advertise? It's not like I can put myself in the yellow pages or something.

The main thing is the experience though. I don't want money or new flashy tricks I just want a laugh, good time and experience. Do I have to wait to start doing things like this or do most magicians my age not bother with this stuff?

Paul Daniels: You are 13 and you are doing fine. You are not alone in being frustrated but you are keen and the jobs WILL come along. OK... to keep them coming you will have to work at it. There is no reason at all why you should not advertise, Yellow Pages or wherever.

PLEASE keep proper accounts. PLEASE put 10% away of all your earnings and NEVER spend it no matter what. Remember... NEVER leave anything valuable in the Dressing Room. Best advice, believe me!
