Pete Firman

Ethan: Do you think mentalists have an easier time and greater earning power than magicians. I ask because it's been an issue raised here of recent.

Pete Firman: I don’t think so. I think its easy for someone to call themselves a mentalist and have a website made, but to carry off mentalism in performance is very hard. I've been spoilt by personal performances by Brown and Nyman, two of the best in the world, they are my benchmark. What they achieve is by no means easy.

They're earning power? I think because of Derren's shows it is hugely popular so a performer with a decent act should be able to do good business. Then again I'd say the same of a decent magic act. If you have a good act I think you'll do all right.

John Doe: When you were on the French leg of the secret world of magic show you went to a small club. There were three guys who did a routine with D’lites to music. They each had 2 D’lites and finished with the fire ears. Any chance you recall who they were?

Ever used the D’lites yourself?

Jonesy: I liked that as well…They did that brilliantly.

Pete Firman: They were called 'Tout est Ecrit', which means 'Everythig has been Written'.

Their D'lite routine was very good. We saw them do other stuff too, which was also excellent.

When D'lites first came out I bought some and had a routine in my Kids Show (Oh the Shame!). These days I don’t do anything with them, but McBride loves them. He was telling me about all the different routines he uses them in, it was extraordinary!

Daren: Are you going to Blackpool? If you are I will be sure to shake your hand and buy you a beer mate, I think you come across great on Television, and would like to meet you in person.

Pete Firman: I wasn’t planning on going to Blackpool, but the free pint might swing it!

I may make it, but I doubt it. Have fun.

Joseph Magic: Sorry for writing this so late- it is still Saturday evening so technically I think its within the official timeslot!

I’m 13 and perform close-up, I wondered if you had any advice on how to get bookings considering my age and what sort of charge I should aim at?

I was thinking about working at a local restaurant- what is the usual "standard" there? How many hours do people do? What do they charge?

Pete Firman: I'm a little out of touch with the restaurant game so I wouldn’t really know what money you should be looking for. I'm sure there are guys on the boards that can help you there. I think you need to make sure your ready, naturally I don’t know you, you could be the best close-upper in the country but I'd be wary of a 13 year old working semi pro in a restaurant.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, these are just my thoughts.

John Doe: You are now an honorary member of Magic Bunny. Will you be stopping around? You can pop in anytime you like now.

Pete Firman: I may stop by. Does it mean I get a huge necklace like the Mayor, or the key to the city or something? I hope so!

Nigel Shelton: Sorry that we can't offer you the ceremonial keys of the website but you may be pleased to know that your "Special Guest" descriptor and full access will remain indefinitely as a reminder of the enormous input that you have provided over the past week.

You will always be welcome to return at any time you wish - many of our "old" special guests still frequent these boards.

Benjonez: I thought [Pete Firman, Ali Cook and That Chav car] was really funny. Me and my mates thought that was just brilliant and you totally stitched up that lad. He really was a total chav. How the hell did you come up with that car trick the method and just the idea.

Also does the balloon through nose make you throw up?

Pete Firman: Thanks for the good feedback. I cant remember who came up with either the idea or the method, but I know it was inspired by Pimp My Ride on MTV.

The balloon trick does make me gag, I guess its like sword swallowing.

Venkman: I guess this is a sort of "where do you see yourself in five years" kinda question, so might as well cut to the chase. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Still performing magic? On TV? Would you take a "regular" television job?. Top Of The Pops etc.? Also what kind of magic do you see yourself performing. (As you seem to be experimenting with lots of different things right now. Or is that just because of the requirement for many effects for TV?)

I am sure this was a better question when I thought of it earlier, lol.

Pete Firman: Five years time? I'm a bit rubbish at that planning stuff. I guess the dream would be to have my own show on television and the ability to tour theatres live. I hope I could count on Magic Bunny members to buy tickets!

I always perform magic that appeals to me, so I'd probably just carry on doing that and not think about it too much. My goal certainly isn’t to present TOTPs but if the right regular TV job came along I would consider it.

Thanks for the question.

Tobias: [I have some questions about exposure]…No, nothing to do with Mr. Goodwin's display last Friday.

How do you feel about the exposure of secrets and the ease with which they are available?

I'm asking because I happen to know that there are quite a few lay people who've bought the 'Get Nyman' DVD either because Derren Brown is on it for about 1 minute, or because of Andy's connection with Derren.

(That'll get some people here rattled.)

In another thread you've said that a person who's mastered the material on that DVD could work for a lifetime, hence my question. Obviously, the number of obsessive Derren Brown fans is relatively small, but your comment got me wondering.

I'm not suggesting that Andy's DVD is exposure, by the way; it's clearly aimed at magicians.

Second, is there any chance of 'The Secret World of Magic' getting a DVD release? I've heard good things about it, but was not able to watch it. Someone else asked this in another thread, but after you'd answered the main question and I'm not sure you've got the time to revisit everything.

Pete Firman: I don’t agree with the exposure of true magical secrets. I think that is wrong.

However, how many times have the linking rings or the thumb tip been exposed? Loads. Watch Richard Ross or Salvano performing those effects and they are baffling. I'm not saying its right, but you can get over the problem, it can be quickly forgotten.

I do think things are different now in terms of the speed you can learn magic and the magic available from when I began. It was all available then but you had to make the trip to the library or send a cheque in the post. Today a search on Google and an instant download are the easiest options.

As far as laymen buying Andy's DVD and the next day performing a mentalism cabaret, I doubt it. When I said 'master the material' I meant 'master'. This would take a number of years performing regularly. I do effects that I can perform and entertain with, but I know there is more I can get out of them, I havent mastered them yet.

A DVD release on Secret World? I doubt it. Sorry. Try getting in touch with Sky One.
