Jay Sankey

Craig P.: The Sankey Sanders Sessions were great (I love the coin splitting routine of Sabders - I use it all the time) and now we have the Sankey Skutt Sessions.

What other session DVD's do you have lined up in the future? I am sure I remember hearing David Acer talking about a Sankey Acer DVD in the future - is that still going to happen?

Jay Sankey: Skutt is the real deal and I predict big things for the guy. Hate to admit it, but there are more than a few things he tips on the SANKEY/SKUTT DVD that I wish to heck I had created! The DVD is being launched world-wide in less than a day and between the truly powerful magic and the truly nutty stuff he and I "get up to," I think it's going to be a very popular project. As for other sessions projects, yes, Dave Acer and I are indeed taping something together SOON and I just finished taping my first -what I call- "guest artist project." We reviewed over 100 video submissions and chose a final 3 "unknown magicians" to tape an all-night session with. We taped it last month and had a complete BLAST! I have no idea when we'll release it, but it is going to kick serious butt!

Garethwitty: Hi Jay, welcome to Magic bunny, I am sure in the few emails I have sent you, you know I love the effects you have shared with us mere mortals. You have mentioned a few time about your top five slights, but what are they?

I know Topper is one and the Dai Vernon Substitute Steal is another, and with you Cannibal Cards is very commercial, but what magic shop was that shot in?

Also I have seen you are releasing a DVD with Mike Skutt! Can the world of magic take this I wonder???

Keep up the great Jay, its getting better and better.

Jay Sankey: A tough question, but I'd definitely have to include The Classic Pass. I use it all the time. And then there's the ever holy Double Lift. You gotta give it the respect it deserves. I'd have to add a False Transfer to that list. You know, any fake put or take involving a small object like a coin or a guppie. And I guess I'd have to add a Classic Card Palm. The toughest decision is the final sleight, but I'm going to go with the Messiah Vanish (from my Revolutionary Coin Magic DVD) because nothing says "real magician" like borrowing a coin, vanishing it and showing both hands empty. (I also have a very groovy clean-up that I've never shared with magicians...but knowing me, one day I will!) Thanks for the question.

John Doe: My question is simple. You appear to be a one man magic factory, where do get so many ideas?

Jay Sankey: I LIVE magic. I really mean it. I watch very little tv. I see few friends. And since the birth of my incredible son Mason (and what with our second child due in just over a month) I don't have any free time. Instead, with a huge smile on my face (largely of gratitude) I spend 12-18 hours each day submersed in magic. Performing, creating, designing, practicing, videotaping, etc. I live in a tiny, tiny world, jammed to the clouds with magic. Really more of a ceaseless magic storm with almost nothing but ideas and feelings and goals and experiences of magic swirling around my head. I assure you, almost anyone who committed themselves to that way of being to that extent would inevitably come up with a few alternative handlings for the Money Paddle. Thanks for the question my friend.

Aommaster: I own quite a lot of your tricks, and I have to say that they are quite good. Many of the tricks are based on simplicity, which is what magic should be all about (Leaving Home).

Which, of all the may tricks that you have created, do you think is the most powerful in getting spectator's reactions? Paperclipped seems to get good reactions, but then again, Leaving Home is a killer when you tell the spectator to examine the key.

Jay Sankey: Well, let me start by running the risk of pointing out the obvious: an effect that freaks people out in the hands of one magician might only puzzle people in the hands of another magician. SO much comes down to the performer, right? Having said that (or at least having written it!) in the last year or so I've been getting CRAZY reactions from with such effects as "In A Flash," "Razor's Edge," and "Holy Moly." There's also a card effect called "Transient" on the new SANKEY/SKUTT DVD that has been in my "top 5 bar effects" for over a year now. It's got a whole "in their hands impossibility factor" while being both a coin and a card effect. It's STRONG! And finally, I hate to be a tease, but next spring I'm releasing an effect called "Nailed!" that I've been keeping to myself for a long, long time and it's also a serious mindblower. It's a two card transpo and, I promise you, it's unlike ANYTHING YOU'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE. (Sorry to sound like a darn ad for my own stuff, but you DID ask!)

Jinexviper: I just recently got into magic and it seems that I encounter a lot of family and friends who don't support me in what I'm doing. My fiancé won't let me touch a trick, let alone pick up a deck of cards when she is around, and my family thinks it's a waste of time and money. So I'm just wondering, did you ever run into anyone close to you that didn't support you, if so what did you do to get past that?

Jay Sankey: I'm really sorry to hear that. A darn shame people cannot be more loving and supportive of someone who has a passion for something that is so fun and simple and wonderful. I hate to come on too strong, but unless you are a complete jerk when you perform or unless you have burnt-out everyone by forcing them to watch magic all the time, it sounds to me that your family and girlfriend simply aren't loving you as well as they should. I mean, in the final analysis, what is love if not SUPPORT. So hey, number one, are you sure she is the woman for you? And number two, to heck with everyone else! If they can't support you or show at least some sincere interest in your magic, DON'T SHOW THEM ANY. It's essential that you protect your love of magic. It is all too easily damaged in this cold, cold world. The next step is to seek out the support you absolutely need FROM OTHER PEOPLE. Don't give up. Magic club members, new friends, co-workers, the bartender at a local watering hole, etc. There are plenty of people who are absolutely fascinated and unthreatened by magic. Just keep looking and whatever you do, stop trying to share our incredible art with insensitive and unsupportive people. It's their loss! Nuff said!
