Getting dropped in the deep end

Damien

Just wondering whether you are glad that you were chucked in at the deep end? You were performing literally straight away. Are you glad now (considering your new occupation) that you were forced to perform?

If you hadn't been, do you think you would be doing professional work now?

Kevin McMahon

I'm very glad I was chucked in at the deep end. It done nothing but good for me, though I hated it at the time, looking back I have no regrets.

I always really envied stand-up comedians but I never saw myself on stage doing what they do. I didn't think I had the confidence but someone grabbed me and pushed me up there. Now I am confident enough, but a little unsure. I think it keeps me fresh!

Your Image

eddiesweeney76

Kevin, there was a big change for the better in your image during the show which did a lot for you and your personality. I was just wondering have you kept your new image?

Kevin McMahon

Thank you for your input! I have tried to keep my new image; I have continued to buy more fitted shirts and jumpers.

My first non-magic and performance question. Cheers!

Right choice?

LeeAlex

I have not seen the programme "Faking it" as I am currently overseas.
>From what I can gather you had a very decent job, moreover a career that has been changed in the course of a very short time.

How do you see the future, and do you ever regret the change of course? (although this may be too early to determine)

Kevin McMahon

I hope the future to be rosy!

If I didn't give this a shot I would never forgive myself and now is the time to do it. I tend to think all or nothing will give the best results and now is the time for me to do it on the back of the “Faking It” success. I'm single with no kids, no mortgage, no strong ties and I'm 24. Now is the time to do this.

'Now' is such a strong word don't you think?

Of course it may not work out. I'm lucky enough to have a Master’s degree behind me if it doesn't. The highs and lows of performing introduced me to emotional responses I never had when I was doing my research. It is like a drug now. If I don't perform well now, I want to find out why, put it right, and give it another shot.

LeeAlex

Thank you Kevin for sharing.

An excellent and well thought out response!

May the future certainly be rosy for you!

Doc

Firstly, well done Kevin.

I admire your decision to "seize the day!” Life is short.

Just to clarify Kevin, have you really given up your PhD? If so, had you thought about doing magic around your studies until you finished it?

I'm a fine one to talk; I left university early to follow another path! (magic)

Jonathan B

And yet you still call yourself "The Doctor of Magic!"

I think the authorities should be informed.

Doc

It's an "honorary" title!

Kevin McMahon

I have quit my PhD - it is true but it is definitely for the better. I have not earned the right to use the title Dr. I think I was doing the PhD for the kudos to some extent anyway. So it's good for my ego that I didn't get it, cause it would go to my head!
